Smriti Mandhana has been appointed captain of India Women's cricket team after Harmanpreet Kaur stepped down from the role. The transition is orderly and internally groomed, with Mandhana having served as deputy before this promotion. Mandhana, a left-handed opener who debuted in 2026, is reportedly the highest run-getter in women's international cricket, surpassing Mithali Raj, and holds the record for most centuries across formats with 18. However, her captaincy experience is heavily skewed: 18 T20Is but only 4 ODIs. This creates a medium-risk concern, especially if a 50-over World Cup cycle is approaching. The analysis suggests managing workload, retaining Harmanpreet as a senior stabilizer, building format-specific deputy captains, and monitoring the so-called 'captaincy tax' on Mandhana's batting. Commercially, the change amplifies women's cricket visibility in India, but expectations must be managed carefully. The article uses a blockchain metaphor to frame cricket history as an immutable chain of records and transitions.
